"How much does a small business website cost?" has a frustrating answer: it depends. So here are the actual ranges, what you get at each level, and the monthly costs people forget to budget for. I design and build websites for startups and small businesses (healthcare, legal-tech, AI and service companies), so these are the conversations I have every week.
All figures are typical ranges in USD. Prices vary by country and by how much the site needs to do.
Small business website cost at a glance
- DIY website builder ($0–$600 to build, $15–$50 per month): Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or similar. You do the design and writing. Fine for very simple sites if you have the time and an eye for design.
- Template site set up by a freelancer ($500–$1,500): a premium theme customised with your content. Quick and affordable, but it will look like many other sites.
- Custom design by an experienced freelancer ($1,500–$8,000): a site designed around your brand and goals, usually 5–15 pages, mobile-first, with basic SEO set up. The sweet spot for most small businesses.
- Agency website ($8,000–$40,000+): strategy, copywriting, custom design and development, integrations and a project team. Right for larger businesses or complex sites.
- E-commerce and web apps: online stores, booking systems and portals cost more because of products, payments and custom features.
What drives website design cost
Number of pages and templates
A five-page brochure site (home, about, services, work, contact) costs far less than a 40-page site with a blog, case studies and location pages. What matters most is how many unique layouts need designing.
Custom design vs template
Custom design costs more but is built around your brand and your customers' journey, which usually converts better. Templates are cheaper but you'll fight their limits.
Content and copywriting
If you supply finished text and photos, the project is faster. If you need copy written or photos sourced, budget for it.
Features
Booking, payments, member areas, multi-language, integrations with your CRM or email tool, and custom animations all add time.
SEO and performance
Good developers build speed, mobile usability and search basics in from the start: clean code, compressed images, proper titles and descriptions, structured data and a sitemap. It's cheaper to do it at build time than to fix it later.
How much does a website cost per month?
The build is a one-off cost. These keep going:
- Domain name: around $10–$20 per year for a .com.
- Hosting: from free for simple static sites, to $5–$50 per month for most small business sites, more for busy stores.
- Website builder subscription: $15–$50 per month if you use one (often including hosting).
- Business email: about $6–$12 per user per month.
- Maintenance: updates, backups and small changes, from nothing on a simple static site to $50–$300 per month on a care plan for WordPress or similar.
- Plugins, apps and premium tools: varies widely.
The cheapest website is the one that brings in enough work to pay for itself. The most expensive is the one nobody contacts you from.
Website builder vs hiring a web designer
A builder is a good choice if your budget is very small, the site is simple, and you enjoy doing it yourself. Hire a designer when your website is a main source of leads, you need to look credible to bigger clients, or you've already tried DIY and it isn't converting. A designer's job isn't only making it look good. It's structuring the pages so visitors understand you and get in touch. (More in why your website isn't converting.)
Small business website checklist
Whoever builds it, make sure your site has these before launch:
- A clear headline saying what you do and who for, above the fold
- One obvious call to action on every page (call, book, get a quote)
- Services or products explained in plain language, with prices or "from" prices if possible
- Proof: reviews, client logos, case studies or portfolio
- About page with real photos of you or your team
- Contact details, location or service area, and a simple form
- Mobile-friendly layout with readable text and large buttons
- Fast loading: compressed images, minimal scripts
- SSL (https), privacy policy and cookie notice where required
- Unique page titles and meta descriptions, a sitemap, and Google Search Console set up
- Google Business Profile linked to your site if you serve a local area
- Analytics installed so you can see what's working
- Consistent branding with your logo, colours and fonts (see brand guidelines)
How long does a small business website take?
A simple template site can go live in one to two weeks. A custom-designed small business website usually takes three to eight weeks, depending mostly on how quickly content and feedback come in. Have your text, photos and logo ready before you start and you'll save both time and money.
