"How much does a pitch deck cost?" is one of the first questions founders ask me, and the honest answer is: anywhere from free to tens of thousands of dollars. The useful answer is knowing what you get at each price level and which level makes sense for the round you're raising.
These are typical market ranges in USD, based on what I see founders paying on freelance platforms, from independent designers and from agencies. Your location and the designer's experience will move the numbers, but the shape holds.
Pitch deck design cost at a glance
- DIY template or AI generator ($0–$100): Canva, Google Slides or PowerPoint templates, or an AI pitch deck tool. You do the writing and layout. Good for drafting, rarely good enough to send to institutional investors.
- Budget marketplace designer ($150–$600): a designer restyles your existing slides. Usually no help with story or charts, and quality varies a lot.
- Experienced freelance pitch deck designer ($800–$5,000): custom design of 10–20 slides, proper charts, a consistent visual system and editable files. Many include story feedback. This is where most seed and Series A startups land.
- Specialist pitch deck agency ($5,000–$25,000+): strategy, copywriting, financial narrative, design, often presentation coaching. Suited to larger rounds where the deck is one part of a bigger fundraising effort.
The expensive deck isn't the one you paid most for. It's the one that made investors pass.
What drives the price of a pitch deck
1. Design only, or story too?
The biggest cost difference is whether you hand over finished content or need help working out what to say. Redesigning a deck with solid copy is quicker than shaping a narrative from scratch, rewriting headlines and deciding what to cut.
2. Number of slides
A 12-slide investor deck plus a short appendix is very different from a 40-slide deck with product walkthroughs. Some designers price per slide (often $40–$150 per slide for custom work); most experienced ones quote per project.
3. Charts and data
Traction charts, market sizing, unit economics and financial projections take the most time to design well, and they matter most to investors. A deck that's mostly data costs more than one that's mostly text and images.
4. Brand work
If you don't have a logo, colours and fonts yet, the designer has to create a mini visual identity first. That's extra time, but it's also useful beyond the deck. (If you're at that stage, see what brand identity design includes.)
5. Extras
Icons and illustrations, custom product mockups, animation in Keynote or PowerPoint, a separate send-ahead and presentation version, and a reusable template for your team all add to the quote.
What a fair pitch deck quote should include
- A short discovery call or questionnaire about your company, round and audience.
- A clear slide count and what happens if it grows.
- A set number of revision rounds.
- Editable source files (PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides or Figma) plus a PDF.
- Fonts and images you're licensed to use.
- A realistic timeline. One to two weeks is normal for a typical deck once content is ready.
Be wary of anything vague: no slide count, "unlimited revisions" in 24 hours, or no editable files. Those usually mean templates resold as custom work.
How much should you spend?
A rough rule I give founders: spend in proportion to what the deck is doing for you.
- Pre-seed, friends and family: a clean template you've tidied yourself is often enough. Follow my quick fixes for a professional-looking PowerPoint.
- Seed or Series A with institutional investors: an experienced freelance designer is usually the best value. You'll reuse the deck structure for updates, partners and hiring.
- Large rounds or public-facing investor decks: an agency or a senior designer working with your finance team.
Freelancer vs agency for a pitch deck
Agencies bring a team (strategist, writer, designer) and a process, which helps on complex raises. A good freelancer gives you direct access to the person designing your slides, faster changes and a lower price, which suits most startups. I covered how to vet freelancers in how to hire a freelance graphic designer.
How to keep the cost down without cutting quality
- Finish your content first. Final numbers and headlines save the most time and money.
- Send your brand assets (logo files, colours, fonts) on day one.
- Share 2–3 decks you like and say what you like about them.
- Consolidate feedback from co-founders into one list per round.
- Ask for a master template so you can update slides yourself later.
A pitch deck is one of the few design projects with a direct line to money. Pay for the level that matches the round, and spend the savings where it counts: on the story itself. If you want the design principles behind a strong deck, read pitch deck design that raises funding.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a pitch deck cost?
A pitch deck can cost nothing if you use a template, around $150 to $600 from a budget marketplace designer, roughly $800 to $5,000 from an experienced freelance pitch deck designer, and $5,000 to $25,000 or more from a specialist agency.
How much does a pitch deck designer charge per slide?
Designers who price per slide often charge about $40 to $150 per slide for custom work. Most experienced designers quote per project instead, because charts, story work and revisions vary a lot between decks.
How long does it take to design a pitch deck?
With content ready, a professionally designed pitch deck typically takes one to two weeks including revisions. Projects that include story and copywriting take longer.
Is it worth paying for a pitch deck design?
If you are pitching institutional investors or the deck is a key sales tool, usually yes. Clear structure and readable charts help investors understand your business quickly, and you can reuse the deck for future rounds and updates.
Can I use AI to make a pitch deck?
AI tools are useful for a first draft of structure and wording. They tend to produce generic layouts and weak charts, so most founders still edit or redesign the result before sending it to investors.
